Jaipur to Udaipur Road Trip: Route, Stops & Tips
The 393 km drive from the Pink City to the City of Lakes is one of Rajasthan's most rewarding road trips. Here's everything you need to plan it well β the route, the stops worth making, and what a cab realistically costs.
Udaipur is the romantic heart of Rajasthan β a city of palaces reflected in still lakes, ringed by the Aravalli hills. Getting there from Jaipur by road is half the pleasure, because the highway threads past two of the state's greatest historical sites. Done right, the journey itself becomes a highlight rather than just transit.
The route: which way to go
The fastest and smoothest option follows NH48 south-west from Jaipur via Kishangarh, Ajmer, Bhilwara and Chittorgarh before turning toward Udaipur. It's a well-maintained, largely four-lane highway with good fuel stops and dhabas throughout. There's an alternative inland route via Bhilwara and Nathdwara, but for a first trip the NH48 corridor is the one we recommend β better roads, better stops.
Distance and drive time
- Total distance: approximately 393 km
- Driving time: 6.5 to 7.5 hours non-stop
- With sightseeing stops: plan a full day, 9β10 hours door to door
If you leave Jaipur by 7:00 am, you can comfortably visit one major stop along the way and still reach Udaipur by evening β in time for a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola.
The best stops along the way
Ajmer and Pushkar (β135 km in)
Ajmer is the obvious first break, roughly two hours from Jaipur. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is one of India's most revered Sufi shrines, and a short detour brings you to Pushkar with its sacred lake and the famous Brahma Temple. Even a one-hour stop here breaks the drive nicely. If you only want to go this far, our Jaipur to Ajmer taxi covers exactly this leg.
Chittorgarh Fort (β230 km in)
If you make one major stop, make it Chittorgarh β the largest fort in India, spread across 700 acres on a hilltop. The Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory), the palaces and the stories of Rani Padmini are genuinely moving. You'll want at least 90 minutes here; a private cab means you can take that time without watching a clock.
Other quick stops
- Kishangarh β known for its marble market and the miniature painting tradition.
- Nathdwara β the Shrinathji Temple, a major Vaishnavite pilgrimage site, if you take the inland variant.
Best time to travel
The ideal window is October to March, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and the lakes around Udaipur are at their fullest after the monsoon. The monsoon months (JulyβSeptember) are beautiful too β the hills turn green β but expect occasional slow stretches. Avoid peak MayβJune afternoons when the heat makes long drives tiring; an early start helps if you must travel then.
What a cab costs
For a one-way Jaipur to Udaipur trip, fares depend on the car. As a guide, a sedan starts around βΉ5,500 and SUVs a little higher, all-inclusive of fuel and driver. Round trips and multi-day packages work out cheaper per kilometre. Because tolls and the exact itinerary affect the final number, it's best to get a quick quote β see our full Jaipur to Udaipur taxi page for current fares and car options.
Why a private cab beats the bus or train
There's no direct fast train, and buses don't stop at Chittorgarh on your schedule. A private cab lets you leave when you want, break where you want, and arrive relaxed. For a route this scenic, the flexibility is worth it.
Quick packing and planning tips
- Carry water, snacks and a light jacket β highway AC plus hill evenings.
- Keep entry-ticket cash handy for Chittorgarh and shrines.
- Tell your driver your stop preferences in the morning so the day is paced right.
- Book accommodation near Lake Pichola or Fateh Sagar for the best Udaipur views.
