Jaipur packs more colour, history and flavour into a compact area than almost any city in India. The forts sit on the hills, the palaces line the walled old city, and between them run bazaars that have traded the same gems and textiles for three centuries. The big three you cannot skip

1. Amber Fort (Amer)

Eleven kilometres north of the city, Amber Fort is the single most spectacular sight in Jaipur. Built in honey-coloured sandstone and marble, its Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) glitters when a single flame is lit inside. Arrive by 8:00 am to beat both the heat and the crowds. Allow at least two hours, and wear comfortable shoes — there's a fair bit of climbing.

2. Hawa Mahal

The five-storey "Palace of Winds" with its 953 honeycomb windows is Jaipur's most photographed facade. The trick most tourists miss: the famous frontal view is from the street opposite, and the light is best early morning. Go inside too — the ramps and chambers give you a different perspective and a quieter moment.

3. City Palace

Still partly home to Jaipur's royal family, the City Palace is a working museum of courtyards, gateways and the Chandra Mahal. The textile and armoury collections are excellent, and the four ornate "season" doorways in Pritam Niwas Chowk are a photographer's favourite.

Astronomy, hills and lake views

4. Jantar Mantar

Right beside the City Palace, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a collection of giant stone astronomical instruments built in the 1730s. The world's largest stone sundial here tells time to within two seconds. A short guided explanation turns what looks like abstract sculpture into something genuinely mind-bending.

5. Nahargarh Fort

Perched on the Aravalli ridge, Nahargarh gives you the definitive sunset view over the whole pink city. The drive up is winding and worth it; the café at the top is a relaxed place to wait for golden hour.

6. Jaigarh Fort

Connected to Amber by subterranean passages and ramparts, Jaigarh houses Jaivana, once the world's largest wheeled cannon. It's less crowded than Amber and the views down to the fort below are superb.

7. Jal Mahal

The "Water Palace" appears to float in the middle of Man Sagar Lake on the road to Amber. You can't go inside, but it's a classic photo stop — particularly at dawn when migratory birds gather on the water.

Museums, gardens and gentler stops

• 8. Albert Hall Museum — Rajasthan's oldest museum, a striking Indo-Saracenic building in Ram Niwas Garden that looks magical when lit up at night.
• 9. Birla Mandir — a serene white-marble temple, best visited in the evening.
• 10. Galtaji (the Monkey Temple) — a pilgrimage site of natural spring tanks tucked into a gorge just outside the city.
• 11. Sisodia Rani Garden — tiered Mughal-style gardens, peaceful and rarely crowded.
• 12. Panna Meena ka Kund — a perfectly symmetrical stepwell near Amber, a quiet gem for photographers.

Markets and the food you came for

Jaipur's bazaars are an attraction in themselves. 13. Johari Bazaar is the place for gemstones and traditional jewellery; 14. Bapu Bazaar is best for Jaipuri juttis (embroidered shoes), block-printed textiles and souvenirs. Bargaining is expected and part of the fun.

And 15. the street food: start with pyaaz kachori and mirchi vada at the old-city institutions, try dal baati churma for a proper Rajasthani meal, and finish with a glass of thick lassi or kulfi.
